They eat it on their Sabbath and sometimes decorate it with sugar glazes, fruit, colored eggs, or candies for special holidays.

Directions:
1 pkg active dry yeast
1 1/4 cups warm water (110 degrees)
1 tsp salt
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup oil (canola, vegetable, etc.)
2 eggs, beaten slightly
2 or 3 drops yellow food coloring
5 to 5 1/2 cups flour, unsifted, preferably bread flour

Glaze:
1 egg yolk beaten with 1 TBSP water
1 TBSP sesame seeds or poppy seeds (optional)

In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water. Stir in salt, sugar, oil, eggs, and food coloring. Add 4 1/2 cups of flour slowly to make a stiff dough.

Turn dough out onto a floured counter or board and knead until smooth, adding flour as needed until it is not sticky anymore (about 5 - 15 minutes). Shape into large ball and turn dough over in a greased bowl; cover and let rise in warm place until doubled (about 1 1/2 hours). Punch dough down; knead on floured surface to release the air bubbles.

Divide in five portions (one can be smaller than the other four - set aside). Roll four of the portions between hands to form a rope about 20 inches long. Place the four ropes lengthwise side by side and braid as follows: pick up rope on the right, bring it over next one, under the third, and over the fourth. Repeat, starting with the outer right rope going over, under, over. Repeat until braid is complete. Pinch both ends together, adjusting braids. When I got there I told them that I planned to cook for them. Imagine my surprise when Jason said, "No Mom, I'm going to cook for you!" This dish is one of the delicious dishes he made while I was there . . .Jason's Chicken Cordon Bleu. I tried this recipe it after I came home but it didn't look as good as this!

Jason's Chicken Cordon Bleu

3-4 Chicken Breasts, preferably thick
Italian dressing
deli ham, sliced thin
thinly sliced cheese, provolone, swiss, or other white cheese
gourmet bread crumbs

Marinate the chicken breasts in Italian dressing for an hour or so. With a sharp knife, cut a hole (on the small side) and wiggle it in the middle of the chicken breast to make a "pouch." Roll up some ham and cheese and slide the roll in the hole. Seal with toothpicks if necessary. Roll prepared chicken breast in bread crumbs. Place on a rack (if you have one) in a baking dish. Bake at 350 degrees for 40-50 minutes or until done. Enjoy!

I asked Jason where he learned to cook like this. His reply. . . "cooking shows on TV." He tapes them and watches them when he comes home from work. I've always encouraged our kids to cook in the kitchen. . . even the boys. I must have done something right!

Tortellini & Spinach Soup

There is nothing like a delicious warm bowl of soup on a cold day. Jason sent a message to me today asking for the recipe so he can cook it for his girlfriend. Chris mentioned earlier last week that we haven't had it for a while. And Brad, who will be 21 next week, wants it for his birthday dinner! So, here is the recipe:

Chicken Divine (It's really Chicken Divan but that is what the kids call it!)

2 - 10 oz packages frozen broccoli
2 cups sliced turkey or 3 chicken breasts, cooked and boned (can use rotisserie chicken, too)
2 cans cream of chicken or mushroom soup
1 cup mayonnaise
1 tsp lemon juice
1/2 tsp curry powder
1/2 cup soft bread crumbs
1 TBSP melted butter
1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Cook broccoli until tender. Arrange in 9 x 13 greased casserole dish. Place chicken on top of broccoli. Combine soup, mayonnaise, lemon juice, curry powder and pour over chicken. Sprinkle with cheese. Combine crumbs & butter & sprinkle over all. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 - 30 minutes until done. Serves 6 - 8 people.

Broccoli Cheese Soup

I got this recipe from another blogger, Jules, at Everyday Mommy and she gave me permission to put it here. Maybe for Christmas because we still have plenty of leftovers to eat!

LAYERED PUMPKIN DESSERT

1 package (10 count) Twinkies
1 – 8 oz. package cream cheese, softened
1 cup confectioners’ sugar
1 – 8 oz. container Cool Whip, thawed & divided
2 – 3.4 oz. pkgs. instant vanilla pudding
1 – 15 oz. can pumpkin
1 cup milk
1½ tsp. pumpkin pie spice

Slice Twinkies in half, lengthwise, and place, cream-side-up, single layer, in bottom of 9x13 baking dish. They actually look like soft pretzels and taste like the Challah Bread that I make. The rolls call for some extra work to make them look like birds with unblanched almonds and making tail feathers with a knife but I skipped that part. People around here eat food no matter what it looks like! Here's the recipe:

BIRD ROLLS
1 package (1/4 oz) active dry yeast
1 cup warm milk (110 - 115 degrees)
1/4 cup butter or margarine, melted
1/4 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. salt
3-1/2 to 4 cups all purpose flour

(Additional ingredients: 1 egg, 1 TBSP water, 16 whole unblanched almonds)

In a mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in warm milk. Add the butter, brown sugar, 2 eggs, salt and 2 cups flour. Beat until smooth. Stir enough remaining flour to form a soft dough. turn onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes. Place in greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour. Punch dough down. Turn onto a lightly floured surface; divide into 16 pieces. Roll each into a 12 inch rope; tie each into a knot. To form bird's head, tuck one end back into knot. With a sharp knife or scissors cut two slits on opposite end to form tail feathers. Place 2 inches apart on greased baking sheets. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 30 minutes. Beat 1 egg with 1 TSBP water; brush over dough. Bake at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. Insert an almond into each for beak. Remove from pans to wire racks to cool. Yield: 16 rolls

MY NOTE: I used the dough setting on the bread machine and skipped the hard work. Just follow the breadmaker instructions for loading the ingredients.

Mashed Potatoes and Noodles

I needed some comfort food today and made mashed potatoes and noodles. Almost as good as Grandma's but not quite. If you want to try it sometime, here's what I did:

Place in crockpot, 3-4 boneless chicken breasts
2 cans chicken broth (I ended up adding a third later)
2 cans cream of chicken soup.

Cook on low all day. Take out chicken and shred - set aside.
In crockpot, add 8 oz egg noodles - the thinner the better. (I tried to find Reames Egg Noodles but ended up using regular ones). Let simmer in crock pot for 30-40 minutes. Add chicken.
I also added a couple spoonfuls of sour cream, salt and pepper. Serve over mashed potatoes! Yum!

Mom's Sticky Buns

My mother used to make these buns for church every Sunday morning for Sunday school.
